Dans la série qu'il intitule Conte éthiopien, Hervé Saint-Hélier retient la forme narrative privilégiée des hommes du voyage comme parcours initiatique et comme instrument de connaissance d’un peuple imprégné de tradition orale. Opérant un détachement affirmé par rapport à la réalité immédiate, le conte déplace le spectateur vers un « ailleurs », au sein d’une contrée étrangère.
A l’instar du conteur dont les talents de transmission stimulent nos sens, entrouvrant la porte d’un monde immensément spirituel, la compréhension du langage poétique de la couleur du photographe dote ses instantanés d’une cohérence singulière nous invitant à un voyage chromatique dans lequel chaque couleur semble extraite d’un paysage intérieur. Agissant comme un guide, la dominante violette nous incite au silence, plaçant ces scènes dans l’ordre d’un cheminement spirituel à partir de la matière vers un « au-delà » mythique, presque inatteignable.
L’Éthiopie, ce pays légendaire, marqué par la foi, situé hors du temps, où il suffit d’un pas pour tomber dans le mythe, voilà ce qu’Hervé Saint-Hélier voulait transmettre dans une vision de thèmes anciens venant se superposer aux figures contemporaines à travers l’observation des ses particularismes. Une exploration de la réalité humaine entre aujourd’hui et hier, entre l’ordinaire et l’extraordinaire, permettant d’aborder à différents niveaux de lecture une société complexe inscrite dans l’histoire de l’humanité et de la foi universelle.

Abstraction, cosmos, urban atmospheres, portraits, so many subjects covered by renowned French photographer Hervé Saint-Hélier, who from travel to travel composes a rich body of work.
In a series that he chooses to entitle An Ethiopian Tale, Hervé Saint-Hélier retains the narrative form of the “Tale”, predilection of voyagers by dint of achieving an edifying voyage as well as understanding a nation deeply ingrained in oral tradition. Such a manifest detachment from the immediate reality displaces the spectator “elsewhere” in a faraway land. An invitation to perform a change of scenery placed under the sign of an encounter with an ancestral world that requires depriving ourselves from reasoning to awake our potential to be filled with wonder. By some sort of mysterious haze, the photographer renders the atmosphere through silhouettes devoid of depth of field perceived on the top of a hill against the purple twilight conferring a dramatic expression to the picture. Moments of magic extracted from everyday life which we are connected to by the “medium” (the camera and the photographer) that reveals, in one instant, the world of archetypes superseding the real world. The visual plasticity of the pictures draws a symbolic distance between tangible realities experienced by the photographer in their ordinariness versus those very same events as lived emotionally by him with the tragic feeling that they may conceal.
In the vein of a story taller, whose talents of transmission stimulate our senses opening the door to an immensely spiritual world, Hervé Saint-Hélier’s intuition of the poetic language of colours – that of black and white on other occasions–, brings a unique coherence to his pictures leading us to a chromatic voyage where each colour seems extracted from an interior landscape. Acting like a guide, the dominant violet hue commands silence elevating the photographic scenes to the heights of a spiritual journey initiated in the material world towards a mythical unattainable « beyond ».
Ethiopia, a timeless and legendary-like country marked by Faith where myth and reality are only one step away. This is what Hervé Saint-Hélier wanted to express by overlapping ancient and contemporary figures directly observed in the peculiar mannerism of the people. An exploration of human reality, between today and yesterday, ordinary and extraordinary, conveyed in an original and meaningful approach that embraces the different levels of perception of a complex society embedded in the history of Humanity and universal Faith.
