Chimère I (Chimera I) is one of the central pieces of the project entitled Les licornes existent encore (Unicorns Still Exist), which deals with the exploitation of humans by humans, often focusing on women, children, and animals.Les licornes existent encore is an installation exploring the sensory and spiritual connections between human beings and Nature through ancestral figures from myths and legends.
Ut Barley starts from the premise that chimeric animals are not just legends but are indeed real. These living beings are hunted, used, and exploited for personal purposes by another living species, humans. Chimeric animals share the same tragic fate as endangered species.
Les licornes existent encore portrays a scene of contemporary myth inspired by fairy tales and ancient mythologies, aiming to represent a reality through symbolic transformation. Present mythologies are interdependent with those of the past. Chimère I is an ode to the preservation of Nature and its living beings.
The choice of green in this context is significant, as it primarily evokes hope and renewal.
Ut Barley lives and works in Paris. After studying cinema and art history, she directed her focus towards collage, which she practices both in analog and digital formats. During her exhibitions, she often works with hybrid forms, involving actresses, dancers, and singers who echo the displayed collages that she writes and stages. She has had the opportunity to experiment with this form at the French Institute in Innsbruck, Austria, and at the TAG gallery in Belgium.
